Yahoo Bulk Sender Requirements

Yahoo requires all senders to authenticate with SPF or DKIM, keep spam complaints below 0.3%, use valid forward and reverse DNS, and follow RFC 5321 and RFC 5322. Yahoo classifies a bulk sender by “significant volume” and does not publish a fixed messages-per-day threshold. Treat claims that Yahoo uses Gmail’s 5,000-message threshold as unsupported.

Yahoo’s bulk-sender rules and dates

Beginning in February 2024, Yahoo began gradually enforcing additional rules for bulk senders. Bulk mail must use both SPF and DKIM, publish DMARC with at least p=none, and pass DMARC through alignment with the visible From domain. Marketing and subscribed mail must provide a clear body unsubscribe link and a functioning List-Unsubscribe method; Yahoo says the RFC 8058 POST method is highly recommended and mailto is acceptable. Honor unsubscribe requests within two days and keep complaints below 0.3%.

Know which mail streams you operate

Separate employee mail, transactional messages, support replies, and promotional campaigns in your inventory. Each can use a different provider and authentication path. Record the From domain, sending platform, DKIM selector, return-path, owner, and purpose. This helps you test the right message path instead of assuming a healthy employee mailbox proves a newsletter platform is healthy too.

Configure SPF without creating errors

SPF authorizes mail systems through a DNS TXT record. There must be one SPF record per domain; combining valid provider mechanisms in that record is safer than publishing a new record for each vendor. Use DKIM to establish a durable identity

Enable DKIM in every platform that can sign mail for your brand. The receiving mailbox should show a DKIM pass on a new test message, and the selector record should resolve publicly. DKIM often provides the aligned authentication signal needed for DMARC when an ESP uses its own return-path domain. Check the live result rather than relying solely on a provider’s setup screen.

Set DMARC with evidence

DMARC checks whether SPF or DKIM passes in alignment with the visible From domain. Begin with reporting while sender inventory and tests are incomplete. Move toward quarantine and reject only after legitimate sources consistently align. This protects the domain from direct spoofing without unexpectedly blocking a known sender. Honor unsubscribe choices

Promotional mail needs a clear visible unsubscribe path, and bulk programs should support one-click unsubscribe when required. Keep suppression data reliable across imports, automations, and provider changes. Essential account messages should remain separate from marketing messages so a person can stop promotions without losing receipts or security notices.

Reduce complaints through better sending

Authentication cannot make irrelevant mail wanted. Send only to recipients with a reasonable expectation of the message, use a predictable cadence, avoid sudden volume spikes, and remove invalid or persistently unengaged addresses using a policy appropriate to your business. Review complaints, bounces, and engagement by stream; they are operational signals, not merely dashboard numbers.

Test after every significant change

A migration, new subdomain, new campaign vendor, or DNS update can change the mail path. Send a fresh test, inspect headers, confirm unsubscribe behavior, and document the owner and expected configuration. This simple habit turns Yahoo’s requirements into a repeatable quality control process.

Keep a change record

Save the DNS values, platform configuration, test header, list source, and accountable owner whenever you introduce or modify a sender. That record reduces risk during staff turnover and makes it possible to investigate a delivery change with facts instead of guessing.
