Website uptime monitoring checks whether a public page or service is reachable and alerts you when it is not. The best option is not automatically the one with the longest feature list. For a small business, the useful comparison is how reliably the monitor checks the right endpoint, how quickly it alerts the right person, and whether that person has enough information to act.

What uptime monitoring should check

A basic monitor requests a URL on a schedule and records whether it receives an expected response. More complete monitoring can check response time, SSL certificate health, a keyword or page-content condition, redirect behavior, and regional availability. Decide which page matters most: the homepage, checkout, booking flow, login, or a critical API endpoint. A successful homepage does not prove every customer path works.

Check frequency and false alarms

More frequent checks can reduce detection time, but a single failed request may be caused by a temporary network issue. Compare whether a tool confirms an outage from multiple locations, retries before alerting, and shows the evidence behind an event. The objective is fast useful alerts, not a flood of messages that staff learn to ignore.

Alerting and escalation

Compare available alert channels: email, SMS, push notification, webhooks, or integrations. Make sure the selected plan supports the route your team actually watches. Define an escalation path for a missed first alert, after-hours responsibility, and who can contact the host, DNS provider, or developer. Monitoring only helps when an accountable person receives a clear next action.

SSL and domain-expiry coverage

Some services include certificate-expiry and domain-expiry checks; others require separate monitors. These are related but distinct risks. A site can be online while its certificate is close to expiry, and a domain can be far from expiry while a hosting outage affects customers today. Page-change monitoring

Change detection can alert you when a page’s content, price, link, or code changes unexpectedly. It is useful for important landing pages, legal pages, customer portals, or externally managed content. Compare whether a tool provides a meaningful difference view and whether normal updates can be excluded. A monitor that alerts on every expected edit is not actionable.

Reporting and incident history

Incident history helps distinguish a one-time host problem from recurring reliability issues. Compare whether the tool records start/end time, confirmation checks, response data, and alert delivery. Exportable or readable history is valuable when discussing service quality with a host, developer, or client.

Pricing and scope

Compare the number of URLs, check interval, alert channels, retention, and included monitor types—not simply the monthly price. A tool may look inexpensive until you add a separate product for SSL, expiry, or page changes. Agencies should also consider whether multiple client domains can be organized and whether alert recipients can be separated.
